NOUN PHRASE

A. Definisi 

Noun Phrase adalah sekelompok kata yang memiliki kepala kata benda. 

Noun head dimodifikasi dengan: kata sifat, kata keterangan, kata benda, gerund, partisip, frase kata sifat, frase infinitif, frase partisip, frase preposisi, dan klausa kata sifat. 

Modifiers tersebut dapat digabungkan untuk membuat frasa kata benda yang lebih kompleks, modifiera dapat berada sebelum noun head atau setelahnya. Noun Phrase tidak bisa dimulai dengan preposi. Noun Phrase dapat dibentuk oleh pola-pola berikut.

B. Single Pre-Modifier

1. Adjective + Noun
Pengubah kata sifat berada sebelum head. Mofifier dapat berupa: article, possesive, demonstrative, number and condition.
a. Article + Noun
Example :
• The book is yours.
• Aminah will buy a computer
b. Possesive adjective + Noun
Examples :
• His car is painted
• My teacher's decision is supposed to be wise.
c. Demonstrative Adjective + Noun
Examples :
• That thief steals the car
• These trees will be cut down
d. Number + Noun
Bilangan bisa berupa bilangan pasti (definite number) dan tak terbatas (indefinite number). Definite number bisa berupa kardinal atau ordinal number.
1) Definite number
Examples :
• Yusuf prepares three books to be read.
• Four houses will be renovated.
2) Indefinite number
Examples :
• Some people joined the meeting
• Many boys attend the concert.
e. Condition + Noun
Modifier of condition di sini menjelaskan kata benda. Kondisi tersebut dapat mengacu pada ukuran, warna, pendapat, bentuk, usia dan origin.
Examples :
• I see a big man.
• Yunus is a handsome boy.

2. Adverb + Noun
Adverb modifier dapat berupa keterangan waktu, tempat, arah.
Example :
• The two years old kid cries along the way to the shop.
• The nearby neighbor usually becomes a close family.
a. Gerund + Noun
Head dari frasa kata benda ini biasanya statif.
Example :
• The living room should be cleaned.
• The smoking area must be made to avoid the air pollution.
b. Participle + Noun
Ada dua pengubah participle. Mereka adalah present participle dan past participle. Head pengubah present participle biasanya bisa dipindahkan.
1) Present Parcticiple + Noun
Example :
• Indonesia is one of a developing country.
• The running kid is my daughter.
2) Past participle + Noun
Example :
• Broken heart is an indication of mental defect.
• Spoiled boat needs to be repaired.
3) Noun + Noun
Noun atau kata benda sebelumnya mengubah kata benda setelahnya.
Example :
• Every town needs department store to replace traditional market.
• Ahmad writes grammar book of English.

C. Pra-Combined Pre-Modifiers

1. Adjective + Noun + Noun
Example :
• A handsome Korean actor movie
• A high quality paper bag.
2. Adjective + Gerund + Noun
Example :
• The best shopping day.
• A wonderful flower painting.
3. Adjective + Present Participle + Noun
Example :
• The most disappointing moment.
• The most confusing subject.
4. Adjective + Adverb + Participle (Present and Past Participle) + Noun
Example :
• An Indonesian beach beautifully interesting.
• The mechanic quickly fixed car machine.
5. Adjective + Noun + Adjective + Noun
Example :
• An awesome GBK stadion broad yard.
• A stylish fashion short blue dress.
6. Adjective + Adverb + Participle + Gerund + Noun
Example :
• Those correctly answered listening test
• Three people quickly played finding machine
7. Adverb + Past Parliciple + Adjective + Noun
Example :
• Patiently waited Korean Group concert.
• A very expanded agricultural production is found in recent years.

D. Single Post-Modifier

Single Post-Modifier memberi arti tambahan melekat pada head (kata benda).
Post modifier dapat berupa: Adjective, Adjective phrase, Infinitive phrase, Participle phrase, Prepositional phrase, dan Adjective clause
1. Noun + Adjectre
Examples:
• I don't see anything wrong.
• We want something else.
• I don't read chapter two yet
2. Noun - Adjective phrase
Examples:
• The boat available in the harbor is only one.
• The food available in the restaurant is fast food
3. Noun + Infinitive phrase
Examples:
• I don't have money to pav the book.
• Anny is looking for book to read for this test.
4. Noun + Participle phrase
Examples:
• I saw two woman wearing glasses in the glass.
• I saw three men robbing the shop.
• I don't like the boat painted red.
5. Noun + Prepositional phrase
Examples:
• Jane takes the boat in the harbor.
• The pen on the table belong to you.
6. Noun + Adjective clause
Examples:
• Jason will buy the boat which is painted red.
• Antonio does not like the gift which was bought by his mother.

E. The Combined Post-Modifiers

Menambahkan keterangan setelah noun.
1. Noun + Past participle + Prepositional Phrase
Examples:
• The boat exported to Canada on cargo does not come yet.
• The letter written by Anne for her mother is returned.
• The photo printed by Tom in my studio is yours.
2. Noun + Present participle + Prepositional Phrase
Examples:
• The guests coming to the party were disappointed to the service.
• The baby crying on the bed is my nephew. 3. Noun + Adjective Clause + Prepositional Phrase
Examples:
• The man who came to our office in that night was my uncle.
• The boat which is available in the harbor cost very high.
